Hundreds of local residents have shared their memories and pictures of Middleton Shopping Centre in celebration of its landmark anniversary.
This weekend marks the end of a month-long calendar of events to mark the centre turning 50, which included a family fundraising day which raised over £1000 for Great Ormond Street and 42nd Second Street.
As part of the celebrations, the centre launched a ‘Faces of Middleton’ campaign, which encouraged local residents to submit their photos to form part of a huge digital mosaic of hundreds of local faces both past and present.
Marie Gribben, centre manager, said: “Middleton Shopping Centre’s 50th anniversary has been a great success and we’d like to thank everyone who shared their pictures or attended our weekly celebration events.
“It has been lovely reading shoppers’ memories and learning how central Middleton has been to community life in years gone by, something we still pride ourselves on today.”
Originally named Middleton Arndale, the centre first opened its doors on October 7, 1971, although it wasn’t until the following year that contractors finally finished work on the three-storey shopping complex.
Local resident, Joanne Ager, shared a picture of her late mother and father on the centre’s Facebook page as part of the Faces of Middleton campaign with the following caption: “My mum and dad both worked at the Arndale Centre. Mum was a cleaner / supervisor and dad worked alongside Bob and Mike but outback doing the recycling for all the shops. Both loved their jobs. It always makes me smile as they were never apart, worked together in their younger days at a garage, then together just before they retired at the Arndale Centre.”
Marie added: “It’s extremely exciting to be centre manager at Middleton for this momentous milestone. We pride ourselves on being a close-knit community shopping centre that is steeped in history, and we are now looking forward to the next 50 years.
“Our key focus now is delivering an unforgettable Christmas experience for our visitors, so make sure you keep an eye on our website and social media for details being revealed soon.”
